Mid 2019 Season

It’s early July, with July 4 looming. The weather has been cooler and slightly wetter than in the last few years. I’ve had a few rolling sessions. My roll is marginally adequate, but will need some work. My left shoulder is now arthritic enough to impact my paddling i.e. my day trips are slower and of shorter duration. I have some PT exercises that will build the musculature etc. around the joint and give it some relief … hopefully.

I have organized a rescue practice for July 9 at Dog Beach. In the unlikely event that all potential participants show up, there would be ~10 people. This far ahead the weather looks fine, but certainly that could change.

Eli and I have had two trips to the Clark Fork Delta, launching at the Drift Yard – the second time with Audrey. We’ve also done the Talache to/from Maiden Rock paddle twice. The second time we saw 2 loons and a Western Grebe. I’ve done Sand Creek many times so far, appealing because it is relatively sheltered and safe. If and when my left shoulder cooperates, I’ll try some paddles of longer duration and distance.

I am happy with our kayak fleet and associated gear. My paddle of choice is my GP, supposedly gentler on the shoulders. My kayak is usually the NDK/SKUK Explorer, although I also like the P&H Capella 163 – the latter being our kayak for guests. Eli is very comfortable in her Necky Looksha IV.
